Unsheltered
Making an invisible crisis public
Unaware of the 1.7 million LGBTQ+ teens living on the streets in the US, people aren’t moved to act on a problem they can’t see and feel.
Courage+ placed typical-looking teen bedrooms in the most unexpected of places — on city streets, directly in the public eye. They were made entirely from cardboard, the same material often used as shelter on the streets. And while people passed by each day, the bedrooms remained exposed to the elements, showcasing these children’s vulnerability.
Unsheltered didn’t just raise awareness, it converted visibility into support for real bedrooms and real safety. As a result of the earned attention and increase in donations, Courage+ was able to buy an entirely new home to house even more LGBTQ+ youth.
